When problems such as obesity, the ball " in your face" field is now , I have a bad feeling . The obesity epidemic and the war against obesity new obsession now seems too enlarged . Last week , the word "obesity" has managed to dominate the headlines again. Being new , it's worse than we thought !
Surprised?
In June 2013, the American Medical Association (AMA ) (contrary to the opinion of the Scientific Committee ) has classified obesity as a disease.
But I bet that the reason for this decision was much more than seeing a science refund schemes .
If the means of qualified and experienced researchers would undertake health begin to understand that being too thin or too fat is bad for your health.
The health risks associated with significant weight are the two extremes . And the number of people in these two areas of extreme seems to be growing . So you can not deny that this is a problem .
For overweight people in the end , I think I bought at a social construction powerfully correct - that being overweight is an automatic penalty of being sick and be expensive to maintain. And this misperception relationships many overweight workers with their employers have tightened.
When I was starting in the business of being a study which refers to the importance of social ties in relation to biomarkers to assess the state of health was published. I think the results were verified during the next 30 years, and finally the conclusions should be headline news . I am idealistic , sometimes can be a bit annoying. Being socially connected is what we need to improve the health of millions of people .
"People who have close ties and unhealthy life styles lived longer than those with poor social relationships and healthy behaviors. "
Alameda County Study (7000 people studied over nine years , American Journal of Epidemiology 1979)
In fact , I think a strong argument could be that thin , and the pursuit of it , are more harmful to the health of Americans that simply being overweight. Not much money to be made on this issue , however.
And you should know that I am not a "big angry man." Types of my friends and family body does not concern me . And I think that welfare programs in the work place are losing valuable time and resources trying to " cure" overweight people who are not sick .
Just does not make sense to stigmatize overweight people in a culture in the workplace with all the negative incentives that I hear about . And do not think the weight loss programs in the workplace to provide lasting results.
"There is nothing in the scientific literature in the last quarter century is also well documented that the abject failure of interventions weight loss , however, will remain one of the most common interventions being at work . . " - Jon Robison , MPH , PhD
Take a closer around your own workplace and you'll discover many overweight people to be energetic , creative , constantly moving , and ( believe it or not ) focus on the core competence of the company. You can choose to lose weight and keep it at a given time. But it will not be due to a work program for weight loss .
If you are in the business of being, and who is trained and programmed to focus on obesity as a focus area , what should you do if you decide not to? Start by asking everyone, including people who are overweight, if they like your work and feel appreciated . I bet you love your work and feel appreciated , too.
" Do you like your job? Valued you at work? ... Negative answers to these questions relate to clinical morbidity and affect longevity, even for those who could , if they wished to change jobs. "
Last person well : staying healthy despite the health system Norton M. Handler , MD
" Welfare " is a term that is beginning to gain favor rather than clinical connotations of the word " welfare." Welfare gives us the opportunity to become a better place. A holistic approach of not - for all your healthy clinic culture. It begins with the vision of beauty , originality , talent and the good side of people, including people who are overweight.
It is that good science is compatible with the concept of treating all people with respect and courtesy.
